About The Artwork

I moved to Florida at the beginning of the pandemic. A decision I came to realize wasn’t the smartest move for various reasons. To get outside and away from people, I went to the beach early every morning. I found it to be my salvation, my peace of mind, my sanity. On these morning walks I noticed incredible objects that had washed ashore. Every day I found a coral, a coconut or sponge or a mangled feather. Some originally from the sea and others originally from the land. I looked for the unusual; objects that had been ravaged by the sea but still beautiful in their natural sculptural uniqueness. Objects that once arranged together shared a common thread of decay and elegance—the brutality of the sea and the weather.

Ann Stratton is a New York and Mexico based fine art photographer. She makes still life photographs of found discarded objects and unusual natural artifacts. Stratton is drawn to elevating every day objects and creating unique compositions where rich textures mimic landscapes. She is interested in themes of temporality as many images depict decay and deterioration inspired by her experience with chronic illness and loss. Despite these heavy themes, Stratton’s photographs convey the potential for beauty, cohesion, and resilience within and despite the challenges they pose.
