About The Artwork
Visiting the Painted Desert National park, I was inspired by the ancient fragile beauty of millions of years of subtle and yet dramatic change. This image tells a story that is both natural and human. The natural developed over millions of years with continental shift, changing climate, oceanic history, and animal evolution. The human story involves ancient cultures and the modern culture of far sighted heroes of conservation that were able to protect this beautiful fragile environment.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
