About The Artwork

The documentary photographs were taken during the demonstration that took place in February 2022 in protest against the brutal murder of Moïse Kabagambe, a young Congolese immigrant who came to Brazil as a political refugee and used to work in a kiosk in Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. During the coverage of the demonstration that had the massive presence of groups, collectives, organizations and leaders of the São Paulo city Black Movement and immigrants and refugees, I chose to photograph only people from the back, without being possible to identify them, but clearly possible, identify the similarity between them as if Moïse were part of each of these people with their backs turned, in the midst of the crowd that took over Avenida Paulista in São Paulo. While processing the images, I chose to remove the entire background from the photographs, keeping only the subjects in evidence and added and mixed them with images of the flags of several African countries, respecting the choice of countries from which the largest number of people were kidnapped in human trafficking. of slavery and then choosing sub-Saharan countries, impoverished to this day, either due to historical colonial exploitation, or due to the continued submission of their leaders to the global exploitative economic scheme. Letieres Leite defines the Slave Quarters Pact as an event that occurred on slave ships and later in slave quarters, on sugar cane plantations and other regions around Brazil. “Back to Black”, reveals the ambiguity of ethnic-racial relations in Brazil. On the one hand, a society that ignores its black brothers, that turns its back on their issues and needs, especially those of black immigrants. On the other, a people who fight to survive and cling to their roots to continue fighting for the right to citizenship and life. Today, fighting together is the Slave Quarters Pact that we need as black people in Brazil.

I am 40 years Black Brazilian documentary photographer. I've been taking photographs for years, but only after the birth of my son Noah, who has Down syndrome, did I find myself. I realized that photography should serve as an instrument of social and cultural transformation and that my images should reflect the reality that surrounds me, in addition to giving voice to those who don't have it. I have several projects in progress including InvisibiliDOWN that shows the invisibility of black people with Down syndrome, the Back to Black project, about the fight against racism in Brazil and a collection that is still being studied about African-based religions in Brazil. I decided to make my photographs available to have financial resources to carry out other projects and exhibitions with my images in Brazil. And also for other people to know my art and its importance in the fight for social justice. In May 2022 I had my first photographic exhibition with the series InvisivibiDOWN, at the Museu do Amanhã(Museum of Tomorrow), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
