About The Artwork

Various sizing options are available on request. Abandoned buildings are time capsules offering glimpses of history, people's stories, and insights into private worlds, along with gorgeous textures, colours, and dramatic lighting. My hope is that viewers are drawn in by the unusual image to wonder about the story behind it. What happened here? Who used this indoor pool? Why was it abandoned? In this case, the pool belongs to a boy's boarding school built circa 1920 in Canada. During WWII, the school was commandeered to house German prisoners of War. After the war, it resumed as a boarding school, then an art school, a private university, and eventually it was abandoned. Photography has been a passion of mine since age 7 when a neighbour gave me an old Brownie pinhole camera. I continue to love the magic and beauty of the world seen through a lens. I aim to capture the atmosphere, feelings, and beauty of a place in a way that is both realistic and personal – being a true record of the place yet full of feeling and atmosphere.

Valerie was raised in Vancouver, lived many years in Toronto, and currently resides in Victoria, BC. She loves high heels and hiking boots, the culture in large cities and the spiritual connection of the natural world. Valerie is drawn to photograph urban street scenes, abandoned buildings and vehicles, and our beautiful natural world. How we balance the two dichotomies (or not) is her focus -- how can we live in a rewarding way that also respects and preserves our disappearing natural world.
