About The Artwork

The climax of the Theyyam fire ceremony, as practiced in the Kannur region of Kerala, India. The centuries-old ceremony features a man elaborately costumed, with an exaggerated mask, who, in the minds of the onlookers, becomes the god. A 12-torch apparatus is built on him, and the torches are fueled by coconut oil, to great effect. This ceremony takes place over about a week in February every year and is mostly at night around 2 to 5 am. Some are held in daylight. There is an extensive exhibit of Theyyam costumes, masks and videos at the Folklore Museum in the city of Kannur.

A photographer since age 13, I've always felt rooted in nature, which continues to astonish me. More recently I've branched out into virtual reality, political and social documentary work. I'm a devotee of Cartier-Bresson, and Sebastião Salgado, but also Alex Webb, Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark and Jan Saudek. The truths that I like to tell about nature have a strong component of awe, either in grandeur or in delicacy. I'm always on the lookout for natural metaphors and try to infuse a certain amount of my work, especially the virtual pieces, with humor. (Photo of me by Harry Marples)
