About The Artwork

This is a unique print - only one copy will ever be sold in this size and color. A country as old as Iran contains many mysteries and much history. One of the most fascinating historical sites near Persepolis is also home to The Cube Of Zoroaster (Ka'ba-ye Zartosht), located at the Naqsh-e Rustam compound. There are conflicting theories about the original purpose of the rectangular structure - some suggesting it was used as a fire temple, and others that it was the mausoleum for one of the kings from the Achaemenid era, when it was built. There are many other theories. From what I've heard, the common name "The Cube Of Zoroaster" is somewhat of a misnomer as there is no evidence it was used as Zoroastrian shrine or pilgrimage site. The Internet says it dates to 5th century BC. I have made this image available as a unique and striking print at the large size of 40 inches square. I arrived at the site late in the day and managed to capture the dramatic light of the low desert sun on the east face of the structure. It has an order and starkness to its architecture that feels eerily perfect for such an old structure. It feels as if it might have fallen out of a Stanley Kubrick film, a monolith sent by some alien intelligence. One of the most fascinating historical sites in the world, certainly - and sadly one not often visited by westerners in the last decades since the Iranian revolution. I decided to make a perfectly square image to mirror the cubical aesthetic of the site. The image has been desaturated and tinted brilliant blue to remove all distraction from the form of the structure while making it far more unique, modern and pictorial than it could be in either black and white or full color. The colored image of the square tower combines ideas of ancient architecture with pop art and a nod toward cyanotype photography, and the blue color feels right for this otherworldly object, because of its association with science fiction - a modernist design thousands of years ahead of its time, emerging out of the desert. The structure is beautiful and also vaguely terrifying - the strongest kind of beauty to my mind. Because the beauty doesn't only come from light and the form of the object, but from its ancient and unknowable history and its absolute uniqueness and timelessness. This image is offered as loose print, unframed and unmounted, a single unique print, signed. 40 x 40 inches, which includes a 2-inch white border The printed image area is 36 x 36 inches This unique, single edition print is rendered on museum quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, printed by a fine art printer using archival inks in the United States. About the paper: Hahnemühle papers are designed for archival storage are acid-free, which makes them highly resistant to ageing. The paper is also lignin-free, which means it should consist of linters or alpha-cellulose. Lignin-free paper does not yellow.

From a multiple Oscar-nominated and Sundance award-winning filmmaker who combines fine art sensibility with a passion for communicating the worlds of civilians caught up in conflict, Longley’s film and photography work witnesses places such as Gaza, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Through an approach best described as Slow Journalism, Longley creates a big picture view from an intimate perspective. Describing Longley's work in the Los Angeles Times in 2019, film critic Kenneth Turan wrote: "What is life like on the ground for ordinary people in another culture, another world? That’s been the bread and butter of observational documentaries for forever, but almost never is it done with the kind of beauty and grace filmmaker James Longley brings to his Afghanistan-set “Angels Are Made of Light.” As his 2006 Oscar-nominated “Iraq in Fragments” demonstrated, MacArthur Fellow Longley, who serves as his own cinematographer as well as directs, has an almost magical ability to envelope us in other realities. He does it via the poetry of his imagery as well as a gift for focused illumination that creates empathetic portraits of people who are both ordinary and intensely involving." ... In 2009 James was named a MacArthur Fellow, and in 2011 a USArtists Ford Fellow. These substantial awards helped to create his most recent filmed and photographic work. James has taught master classes at Hong Kong University, Duke University's Center For The Arts, The Goethe Institute in Kigali, and in Zurich for FOCAL. Longley has been nominated for two Academy Awards and won three Jury Awards at Sundance - for Directing, Cinematography, and Editing - among many other heartwarming accolades. 35mm prints of Longley's filmed work can be found in the archives MoMA, The Academy Film Archive, the Duke University Archive, Wesleyan University, The Northwest Film Forum and the Library of Congress. A portion of James' income from the sale of these images goes to support the people he has filmed and worked with the past - particularly in Afghanistan.
