VIEW IN MY ROOM
The universe works on a need to know basis. We never see the whole picture. I try to make the most from what I do know and what I can see at any given time. My work focuses on issues related to hope, desire and fulfillment, at the intersection of the seen and the unseen. The literal vs. the intuitive. I look to reach up from the mundane, in search of the extraordinary. My visuals are anchored in the solitude of nature, as a sanctuary of strength, wisdom, and calm. Nature is smart. It doesn't judge or criticize. It's honest, and has no agenda. It's the great equalizer. And it’s where I feel most myself. When it's winter in the north, it's summer in the south. When it's daytime in the US, it's night in China. When I'm at my lowest, I am being rebuilt. We're always traveling two directions at the same time, and anything is possible. My 3D collages begin with geometric or hand painted expressive shapes which I collage together and digitize, creating digital “containers.” Those shapes then get sent to a laser cutter on aluminum, steel, plexiglass or wood, before painting, drawing or printing on each, and final assembly. Each work starts and ends with my hand, but travels through the digital space along the way. When I'm working, I don’t have a particular destination in mind. I trust my intuition to take me somewhere meaningful and satisfying. Whether it’s a chance happening while painting a shape, or an impulse to use a certain material or photograph I’ve taken, I keep working until the elements come together into a cohesive whole.

Rob Grad is known for his bold, insightful 3D photo-based assemblages, sculptures, writing, and music. His heavily layered visuals contrast photographic vignettes of majestic natural environments with textures of urban life, infused with his drawing, painting, and words–an aesthetic largely shaped by his two decades living in Venice Beach, CA. Grad’s work addresses existential issues surrounding desire, self-expression, and resilience in a society inundated by technology, social media, and politics. His new work is increasingly influenced by his early career as a musician when he was signed to RCA Records and appeared on MTV not long after graduating high school. He has shown in museums, galleries, and art fairs from Basel to Miami, and Los Angeles. In 2024 he will be exhibiting at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, CA as part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative. Other exhibitions include the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, CA, Torrance Art Museum, Haute Photographie in Rotterdam, and the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston. He has large-scale commissioned works installed on both coasts, and his work is held in private collections. He also gave a TEDx Talk in Culver City, CA, and participated in a global video project for TikTok China. Rob is a southern California native and lives in Los Angeles.
