About The Artwork

This piece is part of a collection that explores the impact of human interference on the natural environment and its resilience/defiance to overcome it. 'Fenced Oak' employs the symbolism of the entanglement of tree and fence to convey the negative impact mankind have on nature. Whilst the mighty oak tree is showing signs of resilience and defiance by contorting the fence and ripping the decaying fence post from the ground. Sepia and selenium split toned print on Fibre Based paper (pearl finish)

George Russell is a fine art photographer, passionate about analogue photography, experimenting with old and new processes. This passion for photography was discovered partway through studying for an Art and Design Degree in 2014 when his tools of choice at the time were paint brushes and mixed media when the magic of the darkroom was unveiled. Unlocking a whole new set of tools and possibilities. Pushing the boundaries is consistent theme throughout his work. Whether it be through building abstract multiple aperture cameras, intentionally contaminating prints or altering chemical processes there is often an element of relinquishing control to allow the unexpected to happen. The two most recent projects, ‘our contaminated planet. (2019)’ and ‘contaminated planet 2. (2020)’, investigate the causes and effects of climate change. Incorporating strong symbolic processes by using samples of pollution from contaminated locations and using them to interact with prints to create striking imagery that carries a poignant message. During 2020 there are plans for a solo exhibition of the ‘Contaminated Planet’ and setting up a photography workshops business tailored for both educational and private settings, with the greater ambition of turning it into a travelling business model to cater for a wider audience.
