About The Artwork

This is a detail from a new work which represents a shift in my working methods, or a coming together. Where I had been making paintings and sewn and embroidered works as separate pieces, this is the first time the two have been combined: it just hadn't occured to me before! The whole piece is a sculpture as well as a bag: a functional sculpture. This detail is from the front, and the photo was taken before the piece was completed, so it has evolved slightly since then, but not unrecognisably! The last circle in this picture turns into arrows pointing outwards, and the back of the bag/sculpture is covered in arrows of various colours... The inside of the bag is lined with a velour type fabric and has two pockets in which are tucked two small zip-lock bags containing the material "waste", or left-overs from the making process: off-cuts of thread, empty thread bobbins, paper notes, a blown light bulb from my sewing machine, dried-up left-over paint... off-cuts of fabric... The intention behind this is to see the whole process of art-making, and to include in the final product as many of the "waste" products as the process has created alongside the intended artwork.

I have been making things forever. Making things is how I make sense of the world. I guess everyone works in a different way, but somehow, once I start making it's like connecting with an inner voice, or my subconscious, and as I make, the meaning and inspiration which triggered the idea reveals itself to me, and often surprises me!
