About The Artwork

This photo captures a moment of profound symbolism within the context of Berlin's history. In the foreground, a portion of the old Berlin Wall stands, an icon of past political divisions. This segment features a breach, a fracture representing the fall of barriers and reunification. Behind the breach, a cyclist speeds determinedly, symbolizing movement and change. The background is dominated by the rigid and austere facades of Berlin's buildings, silent witnesses to the historical events that have shaped the city. The dark and foreboding sky above them evokes a sense of tension and uncertainty, but also of hope and resilience. This image encapsulates the complexity and richness of Berlin's history, inviting the viewer to reflect on past divisions and the possibilities of reconciliation and renewal in the city's present and future. The photographic print is produced from certified files using a blockchain system (similar process to NFT).

Paolo Grassi was born in Tuscany and began photographing at a very young age in an analytical manner starting from 1976, after studying photographic technique and lighting based on the experiences of Andreas Feininger and Ansel Adams. For about 15 years, he explored the elements of nature and people through the filter of photographic film with a 35mm reflex camera, which, due to its compactness, accompanied him daily for many years in his visual exploration. Many images were captured on film, and only a small portion was personally printed in black and white in a darkroom. A significant aspect of this period is the photographic research conducted in Sardinia in 1979 (the year of the kidnapping of singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André in Gallura), where he interpreted and documented the environment, traditions, and faces of the people in black and white.
