About The Artwork

Landscapes printed in black and white to me are timeless. They always seem to be more accurate to me than color landscapes. I had been visiting my Aunt and Uncle at their cabin in the Smoky Mountains. Their cottage isn't far from the French Broad River, and the bridge over the river afforded an excellent opportunity for a black-and-white photo. I drove over that bridge many times, scoping for a safe place to park plus looking for the right light. However, I was running out of time, and I finally could squeeze down the bridge safely on the last day of my visit. It was a very bright day, and it was not the right light I was looking for. My mind was falling into that trap. The trap photographers fall into when they "know" the exposure will be horrible, so why bother? But something in me took over and said this could be a fantastic black and white. I bracketed the exposure, creating one image leading toward the blacks, one to the highlights, and the rest toward the middle tones. I was shooting blind because the glare off my screen was terrible. I had to trust what the light meter was showing me in the viewfinder. After I completed the image, The only thing I removed from the picture was the power lines. There are two lessons I seem to never tire of learning. Lesson #1 - It's never the tool; it's always the tool user. Lesson #2 - When in doubt, take the shot. I took the photo outside Newport, TN overlooking the French Broad River on May 26, 2019. I'm making a limited edition print of this image on Hahnemühle's Fine Art Photo Rag Baryta high gloss finish. The natural white cotton paper contains no optical brighteners. The combination of the cotton artist paper and the high-gloss inkjet coating lends FineArt prints a striking character with a beautiful, elegant sheen without glare. The image is printed with a border. The image size is 16x24, with the final paper size of 17x25. Paper specs - 315 gsm · 100% Cotton · white · high-gloss finish
