Gary and I cycled from London to the South of France in the Summer of 1981. At the end of a very long ride, we ended up on the Mediterranean coast at the port of Agde. I refused to go any further along the coast as I had cycled there before and remembered the roads to be relatively narrow with lots of sharp climbs and steep descents, so we started asking around about campsites. We only got one strong recommendation, followed the directions and arrived, unwittingly, at what turned out to be one of the largest Naturist sites in Europe. It was more than a little unnerving exiting the tent with no clothes on for the first time. After a few days it seemed perfectly straight forward being unclothed except when we had to visit the onsite bank, that remained weird each time we had to go. There are only 2 practical downsides to Naturism; making sure you are properly protected when cooking and you have to be very, very careful when exposing any part of you that has not previously seen much sunshine.... Gary suffered from what he described as near fatal backside sunburn. He peeled after a few days and I made this image. We took the train home. The image was originally taken on film. I processed the film after getting home, but have now scanned the negative. Gary. Cap d'Agde is printed using archival ink on Canson Baryta Photographique 310 gsm paper. Paper size is A5 14,8cm x 21cm. Image size 18 x 12 cms. Signed, dated with edition number on verso.

Born in 1955 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and could not wait to get away. Spent time after finishing an ignominious school career in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan Pakistan, India and Nepal. Then studied Photography at Sheffield Poly, starting in 1979. Did Teacher Training and taught for 1 year at a school in North London which was more than enough. Subsequently worked for Warner Brothers in a non photographic capacity and the BBC both Teaching and Photographing. I have recently returned to working with traditional, wet processes alongside digital. The images in my portfolio start in the 70's and go through to the present day. www.ianhoskin.co.uk
