Knarled Hands Description An older couple was sitting on a park bench in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. As I approached them, I became fascinated by them and asked if I could photograph the man’s hands. They said “Of course,” but the man didn’t know what to do. The woman said, “Oh here, honey,” grabbed his hand, and there was the picture, perfect just as it was. No editing or special effects needed. It turned out that the couple was from San Antonio, Texas – my hometown. One of my major influences in street photography is Henri Cartier-Bresson. This image is a good example of what he called “Le Moment Décisif” (The Decisive Moment). It is the exact moment that tells the story of the picture. I am also indebted to Alfred Eisenstaedt, a staff photographer for Life Magazine, who captured many iconic moments in American life, and Dorothea Lange’s depiction of human suffering in the Great Depression. Street photography is the most demanding genre. The photographer needs to have the correct lighting, composition, and timing to tell the story. There is no second chance. May you seek these small moments of beauty in your life. Taken together, they can enhance your happiness.
