About The Artwork

Created as part of my "Nonsensical Senses" project, one art critic commented "This sets my teeth on edge" and quite frankly, that is the best review I've ever had. Playing with ideas of product photography I explore how advertising uses images to play with our senses. I then subvert those visceral reactions by replacing the expected with the unexpected. The result is an artwork which never fails to provoke a reaction. Unlike most of my work, which is about finding the unusual on the streets of my home city of Nottingham, in the "Nonsensical Senses" project I was exploring the visual language of advertising. It was a studio-based project taking the irrelevant subversion of dadaism and applying it to our consumeristic, image-rich society. The project was shown in the Adams Gallery Space.

A lot of my work focuses on the intersection of politics, people and place. For all my life I've lived and worked in Nottingham, forming an intimate bond with the place as it and I continually change. It is out on the streets that I find myself feeling most at home, walking among a myriad of stories and memories. I'm drawn to political events, the numerous rallies and marches of political campaigns. Sometimes tiny affairs protesting the closure of community centre and occasionally mass demonstrations where it seems half the city is on the streets. Whether it is on the streets or back in my studio, I look for the unusual, creating images which suggest a story for the viewer to complete.
