ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The original photo of the found imagery from a collection of family photos found at my grandparents' house that span decades. What attracted me to this photograph was the black and white, the uniformity, patriarchy (all male), which is representative of the institutions within a patriarchal society. This is the original image for the collection of work, thus, is the basis of the rest of the collective. Hopefully, with this image, the audience will feel what I feel, the documentary-esque black and white, rigid, structure, a sense of history, the crux for commentary of change and why things are the way they are now. At a later point in the creation of the collective, I learnt that the photograph is of the West Indian cricket team, which does not alter the influences and inspirations of the work, instead adds another layer of information to the subject matter, especially being viewed more so as a male-dominated sport.

Born in London, England, 2001. Lives and works in London, England. www.leahmichellecayol.com. Currently taking an interdisciplinary approach, working with paint, photography, video, sculpture, and installation. Recent works are anchored by the found imagery of her family with photographs being viewed as an object and an embodiment of memories. Consisting of analogue motifs and process that are disrupted, often by digital processes. These disruptions then expand on the original narrative, forming new realities, that are fragmented yet fluid.
