Roadwork in Yazd, Iran - Limited Edition of 3 Print

I lived in Iran for over a year between 2007 and 2009 and traveled the country extensively, experiencing the country in a way rarely afforded to Americans. Of the most amazing places I visited was the ancient city of Yazd, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities. Ordinary Iranians go about their business in a city of which many parts seem to have fallen out of the distant past into the present. I found this street scene one morning while out walking. There are ubiquitous archways throughout the city center, and they throw sunlight into beautiful curves across the dusty mud brick masonry. Combined with these arcs are the rough perspective lines of the low buildings, leading our eyes into the scene. I was struck by the near-opaque outline of the worker caught in profile silhouette, with the old man bicycling toward us into the middle ground, while in the background we see a man walking into the far distance, through yet another ancient domed archway. The three figures just so, the arc of the archway shadow, and the natural and preoccupied stance of the worker as he leans on his downward rested pick, the suggestion of sunlight on the edge of his shirt, his hand barely emerges from shadow - his arm is only a fading suggestion: These are the things that attract my eye to the composition as I made it. The signed print is 40 x 29 inches, which includes a 2-inch white border (3-inches along the bottom edge.) The printed image area is 36 x 24 inches This is a loose print, unframed and unmounted. This limited edition print is rendered on museum quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, printed by a fine art printer using archival inks in the United States. About the paper: This is a 300 gsm paper, meaning it is 300 grams per square meter, and feels heavy and substantial to the touch. I am making photographs as one might make paintings - in the sense that these are not action shots, mainly, but contemplations. I like the matte texture of this paper for the way it creates a painterly richness and lack of glare from the surface. In the hands of my printer the black tones of the Hahnemühle paper are deep, substantial, and pleasurable to the eye. Hahnemühle papers are designed for archival storage and are acid-free, which makes them highly resistant to ageing. The paper is also lignin-free, which means it should consist of linters or alpha-cellulose. Lignin-free paper does not yellow.
