About The Artwork

In the far south of Italy, high on a mountain, is Matera. It forms the backdrop to the 2019 James Bond film - and was also the setting for Christ Stopped at Eboli. It is a beautiful town - and is special because until the 1950s, people there lived in caves. Their lives were harsh -and these boots, photographed inside one of the cave houses, shows the tough environment in which they lived. Anyone whose forebears farmed land to survive will recognise the struggle with nature that these boots represent. Other images in the Matera collection show just how wonderful a place it is - European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Welcome. If you would like to discuss framing or how to light the image, please get in touch. The sizes currently available are those which I think work well but if your home or office needs something different, please get in touch through my website - www.fineartphotography.london (you will need to copy and paste this address into your browser). I will then make the size you require and provide it through this portal so you will have all the Saatchi assurances. My work is a reflection of a life lived - travel as a child across a wide swathe of the world - from the intense sunlit beauty of Penang to the grey chill rains of North Wales. Childhood ended with injury and a long period of hospitalisation: in the depths of that time, I endured perceptions of the world not dissimilar to those that Sylvia Plath describes in The Bell Jar - colours, noises, shapes all distant and diffused. Memories of this state still provide alternative perceptions of reality that inform my work. As an adult, my life has remained various: I have worked in China and Japan; swum by moonlight in the waters of Lake Baikal and borne witness to the thawing Cold War in Vladivostok. And photography, of course, has taken me to many countries - as has twenty years as a writer on history and culture.  Two books on Japan brought a deeper understanding of that very particular, spare culture.  And a study of twentieth century war art (published by the Tate and Imperial War Museum) brought me into daily contact with the work of lyrical artists like Eric Ravilious, Paul and John Nash, Henry Moore and John Piper - lasting influences, embedded by long, private interviews with Moore and Piper.  The final major influence on my work came from the not for profit organisation I helped to found that helped people with disabilities and chronic conditions have a public voice - using photography and film to tell their truths. I learned not to impose my ideas - an approach that is now at the heart of my work in the sense that I try to have my images be true to themselves.  I have had nine exhibitions: my studio is in Notting Hill - a stone's throw from the birthplace of the subject of my last but one exhibition, Virginia Woolf. My last exhibition was "The Past Vanishes", a meditation on Bulgarian history - held at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London.
