About The Artwork

Inspired by the human condition and current issues of social justice around the world, the series Silence arises from the idea that self reflection and reflection on the internal struggles of those around us is a necessary step toward positive societal change. The lips represent the primary tool of communicating with others, but their power can be even stronger when they remain shut. This piece explores the idea of keeping silent, and what it means to the person who makes this choice. They may feel like they are being torn apart from the torments they are experiencing, and the struggle to stay silent can become painful. It makes one wonder why this pain is preferable to speaking up, and what our role is in this choice as their friend, relative, or just fellow human being.

Radina Droumeva is a conceptual photography-based artist living and creating in the small community of Ladner, BC, Canada. She finds endless inspiration in the peace and solitude of her natural surroundings. Radina's work explores physical and psychological relationships in her environment through surrealism of still life objects. Her scientific background as a bioinformatician allows Radina to combine biological and mathematical research techniques with digital processing. Radina's main approach to creating involves the use of iterative stages - photographs of individual objects or scenery are guided through a cyclical process, coaxing subconscious ideas to life.
