About The Artwork

This is an underwater photograph of two walruses playing under the light, with the artist choosing to exhibit this photograph at the Barbican Young Visual Artists Group. "For me, this exemplifies the essential elements of my photographic style. The walruses are so balletic and their positions seem so complementary, they seem to be posed that way, lending a diorama-like artificiality to the scene. The luminous blue beam of light which makes them visible gives a saturated beauty to the whole composition, making for a rewarding high dynamic range." These are Giclée prints with 80-year archival ink printed on resin-coated Epson Semi Gloss paper. The semi gloss, flat surface lends the artwork a photographic feel, combined with the subtle painterly feel of a Giclée fine art print. Please contact for framing options: by default, the work is named, numbered and signed on the back, but printing with a bleed (white border) will mean this can be done on the front: contact rebeccalouiselynes@gmail.com if this is desired.

Becca works primarily with nostalgia, technology and the natural world. She enjoys the absence felt in many of her works, usually choosing to capture a scene which does not feature human intervention, or with human intervention as an implication rather than a fact. Her more personal works use her own absence as a record of her presence. The photos she usually selects for exhibition have a quality of artificiality about them, a shallow depth of field often rendering them the quality of the 'miniature', almost like dioramas. This technique combined with an attraction to natural instances of luminous colour defines her current style. Although her main disciplines are videography and photography, she also likes to create loose intimations of figures from pencil and watercolour.
