About The Artwork

"Snail" touches a very contemporary reality: the use of the drugs for anxiety. We are taking these remedies like we eat food. After a long time taking this drugs, there's a loss of the identity. We're no longer ourselves anymore. We look at the world with a certain indifference. My self-portraits from this collection question my relationship with the medicines I take.

I’m a visual artist, with a post-graduation in Photography, Image and Memory. I live and work in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I started my career as a photographer when I was 17. During 7 years I worked for several magazines in Brazil making portraits while I was making experiments with video. Soon I quit photography and started to edit and then direct videos and short documentaries for tv and others. Photography and video gave me the background I need to develop my work as an artist, where I put the most of my energy and time. They are only support for me because the most important thing in my authorial work is what I want to materialize, not the technic I use, but thank to them I can get my projects done. I like to deconstruct the technic and create my own language. In my works I use negative stitched in paper, scanner, ink, texts, photos, videos, mirrors, boxes and other elements. I have 29 photographs and one book in the Joaquim Paiva’s collection, which is the largest private photography collection of Brazil. He’s donating all his collection to the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and I’m glad to have part of my work there. Joaquim Paiva himself curated my first solo exhibition, in Kreatory Gallery, in Rio de Janeiro, in 2012. The same exhibition was shown in Instituto Bernardo Mascarenhas, a museum in Juiz de Fora, which is a city in Brazil. In 2014 the same exhibition went to Seoul, in South Korea. In 2013 and 2014 my work was also part of Singapore and Hong Kong art fairs, and also part of Artigo, an important contemporary art fair for young artists in Rio de Janeiro. I showed and sold some pictures on these fairs. In 2015 I won the prize Paraty Em Foco for the video “27years16h”. The same video was exhibited in the Nodo CCS Internacional Art Video, in Venezuela, and I won the video art category in O Cubo Festival 2014, in Rio de Janeiro. The video was also shown in the 7th Cairo Video Festival, in Egypt, and in Bideodromo Video Festival, in Bilbao, Spain. In this year, 2016, it was select to a video exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and now it’s part of the permanent collection of the museum. All my work touches the repetition, in an attempt to understand the time / space where I am now. I am obsessed with holding it, killing it in some way while keep it alive, setting it to images.
