ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Part of Native artist Wayne King's "Spirit Pony" collection this edition of 5 signed original photo montages 18"x24" is printed on fine art rag paper using archival inks and created from a scene along a snowy Smart's Brook in Thornton, New Hampshire. Though King's ancestors - Iroquois and Abenaki from the northeast were not "horse people" like the Cheyenne, Sioux, Apache etc of the plains, Horses, more often referred to as ponies in Indian legend and lore, nonetheless played an ever-widening role for Native people in the years after the Spanish first brought them back to the Americas. ("Back" because prehistoric horses - Eohippus - did exist in the Americas but were probably gone before the evolution of humans.)

Wayne D. King is an accomplished photographer and imaginative artist. His work can be found in the collections of a broad range of people including Livingston Taylor, Koko Taylor, Richard Merritt, Bill Bradley, W. Richard West Jr, Bruce Babbitt, Bill Clinton, Adhiambo Odaga, Bill Russell, Valerie Jarrett, James West, and others. His images are a celebration of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into what he calls "a dreamlike quintessentialism" designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King takes the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope, and dreams.
