About The Artwork

The Chinese revolution and its visual depiction in posters inspired many people around the world, for a variety of reasons. Without even knowing the details of Chinese events, viewers could appreciate some of these posters as rare positive depictions of disenfranchised communities building a new society. From the students making posters during the May 1968 Paris uprising to the Black Panthers in the United States, groups outside of China paid close attention to the GPCR and its artistic output. These posters served as influential cultural tokens during the 1960s and ’70s, reinforcing the revolutionary spirit of numerous communities struggling for self-identification and social change. This was my inspiration in creating a series of posters using the cantonese writings over the asphalt as traffic signs indications, analogue manipulation of the image and finally generating a highly graphic poster. the colour yellow was chosen because is still reserved for royalty. Clothing and objects that are yellow in color still resemble a higher social status. Although each dynasty designated each official rank with their own color, yellow is reserved or the emperor himself. The color yellow and its shades are also the main color of Buddhism; thus it represents being free from worldly cares.

MY WORK IS ESSENTIALLY A TRANSFORMATIVE PROCESS OF CREATION. I CAPTURE IMAGES OF CITYSCAPES, PEOPLE, URBAN FEATURES, ARCHITECTURE. THESE EASILY COMPREHENDED REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGES ARE THEN DISTILLED, ABSTRACTED AND REPURPOSED. MY PRACTICE REMOVES THE CERTAIN RECOGNIZABLY INHERENT IN THE IMAGES, STRIPPING AWAY AND CHANGING SCALE, FEATURES, DETAILS AND POINTS OF VIEW. THEY ARE THUS RENDERED DOWN TO THE FUNDAMENTAL BUILDING BLOCKS OF A NEW WORLD. COMBINING THESE ABSTRACTED IMAGES, DYNAMIC COLLAGES OF FRACTAL PATTERNS AND RHYTHMS EMERGE FROM APPARENT CHAOS. THEY STILL CARRY WITH THEM THE FAINTEST SUBLIMINAL SIGNALS OF OUR REALITY, TRANSFORMING THEM INTO THE FOUNDATIONS OF A WORLD THAT NEVER EXISTED BEFORE. AND YET, THE PERCEPTIVE VIEWER WILL SENSE A NAGGING FAMILIARITY FROM THE FAINT ECHOES OF OUR OWN REALITY THAT VIBRATE THROUGHOUT MY FINISHED WORKS.
