About The Artwork

All of us in life, at one time or another, come head to head with an obstacle in our path that seems unconquerable. The thought itself of the dangers that lie in our future, tax us even more than dangers themselves. We shy away from these adventures that may push us out of our comfort zones. We stick to a routine that is not fulfilling and is weighing heavily on our health. We fantasies of how things could be better and hold resentments about people and regrets. All in all, the elephant that we have to face is still out there. The one who fears it before he has met it, suffers longer than he has to. Life is suffering, and we are built for struggle. Eventually, we will meet up with the beast that stands in our way. We can choose to wait until it attacks us in the safety of our beds and couches, or we can develop a warrior spirit like that of the Maasai in Africa. Stories and poems are written of people who faced their fears. Whether they overcame them or not, that is another issue. We all have that burning desire in us, to go through life, with our shoulders back, staring straight into the eyes of the enemy. The enemy may not fear us, but he must respect us. Nihil timendum est. This art piece is a reminder to face your fears, willingly, everyday. No matter how big they may be. If you run away, you suffer. If you face them, you suffer; but at least by facing them, you have the possibility of making a change and coming out victorious. Strand up straight, and Face your fears.

Wachira Mwangi is a self taught, digital artist, photographer and painter from Nairobi Kenya. He was raised in the slopes of Mt. Kenya. After finishing college and working for about 3 years, he apprenticed under British photographer David Beatty. David was instrumental in turning Wachira Mwangi into a professional who understood his own artistic journey. Wachira Mwangi is greatly influenced by African mythology, on which he was raised on. His work aims to use African wisdom, perspectives and stories to tell the story of Humanity. He is motivated by the history of his people. The rich culture of the land and the long line of injustices that have plagued the land and and the deep spirituality of his ancestors. It is through this work that he wishes to open up uncharted areas of the mind for the viewer, and communicate a global truth via a very local story. His creative process involves writing a story as he hikes across his native land, sometimes up Mt. Kenya and sometimes to the old abandoned and vandalised shrines of his native tribe. These stories are considered taboo even by his own kin. And he understands that the longer he looks into the abyss, soon enough it will stare back at him. Real treasures are to be found where you least want to look. And that is exactly where he wants to direct you. Into the madness: that's where wisdom lies Wachira is a great admirer of Alexander Mcqueen.
