The largest freshwater lake in Wales, it was formed when the encroaching dunes cut off the local rivers in prehistoric times. The Sixth Extinction "I sought the future and past catastrophe of the social in geology, in that upturning of depth that can be seen in the striated spaces, the reliefs of salt and stone, the canyons where the fossil river flows down, the immemorial abyss of slowness that shows itself in the erosion and geology." - Jean Baudrillard The evolution of life on earth has been disrupted by five ‘mass extinction events’ the worst of which wiped out 95% of all life. Current rising carbon dioxide levels and rates of species extinction has led scientists to conclude that the planet is now experiencing a sixth mass extinction event. In 2011 the world’s leading paleogeologists converged on an area close to my birthplace in the UK’s Westcountry. The latest clues to the cause of one of the mass extinction events were thought to lie in the rocks and fossil record of the cliffs and foreshores of North Somerset. More precisely, in an inch-thick layer of buff-coloured limestone that is rarely exposed in the strata of the cliffs. A layer below which life teemed, but above which most of the planet’s species simply vanished. The news report seemed quaintly incongruous – scientists hunting for clues to cataclysmic global events on my local beach armed only with rock hammers and some sandwich bags. Following the team of paleogeologists as they pursued the two hundred million year old mystery led me to the coastlines of North Somerset and South Wales and a meteorite crater in western France. Sifting tiny clues from the strata of the geology, they used forensic methods to recreate a picture of an ancient global ecosystem. Adopting the same locations, I examined local historical and environmental records, hunting back through the spans of geological time for traces of other extinct ecosystems, transient echoes of that mass extinction. Photographing the residue that remains in the alchemy of the rocks or the shadows of the undergrowth, each image in the project reflects a particular ecosystem ‘die-off’. From the debris of a meteorite strike to the tell-tale traces of lethal sea level fluctuations; from the geomorphic evidence of the UK’s worst natural disaster to the traces of vanished communities and the footprints of Neolithic man. Each ecology has dissipated to a new strata of dust, awaiting rediscovery by future paleogeologists. Clues to mass extinction events yet to come. The term "limited edition" has various meanings depending upon the artist, publisher, distributor and seller (or reseller). Saatchi Art uses the term "limited edition prints" to denote two dimensional art prints available through a pre-publication license agreement between the artist and Saatchi Art and sold pursuant to an exclusive prints publication arrangement.
This exclusive arrangement with the artist establishes a total maximum number of prints based on a single original high resolution digital image of a specific work of art created by the artist for limited and exclusive reproduction based on different paper type and/or dimension of the print. Certain information about the limited edition print and sale will be provided to buyers in a Certificate of Authenticity which is included with the purchase of each limited edition print through Limited by Saatchi Art. Saatchi Art is selling "limited edition prints" in compliance with the standards of disclosure established by California law regulating the sale of limited edition art prints. The image for any limited edition print may, in certain circumstances, be licensed by the artist for reproduction on other consumer products, such as phone cases, apparel and other home décor accents (but excluding two dimensional art prints).
California law provides for disclosure in writing of information concerning certain fine prints, photographs, and sculptures prior to effecting a sale of them. This law requires disclosure of such matters as the identity of the artist, the artist’s signature, the medium, whether the multiple is a reproduction, the time when the multiple was produced, use of the plate which produced the multiple, and the number of multiples in a "limited edition." If a prospective purchaser so requests, the information shall be transmitted to him or her prior to payment, or the placing of an order for a multiple. If payment is made by a purchaser prior to delivery of the multiple, this information will be supplied at the time of or prior to delivery, in which case the purchaser is entitled to a refund if, for reasons related to the matters contained in such information, he or she returns the multiple in the condition in which it was received, within 30 days of receiving it. In addition, if after payment and delivery, it is ascertained that the information provided is incorrect, the purchaser may be entitled to certain remedies, including a refund upon return of the multiple in the condition in which it was received.
Buyers of limited edition prints are entitled to a Certificate of Authenticity upon request prior to placing a limited edition print order online, or at the time of or prior to delivery of the limited edition print. Every limited edition print sold through Limited by Saatchi Art comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which includes a certification that the "information and statements contained therein are true and correct."
Saatchi Art is the exclusive distributor of limited edition art prints available for sale on Limited by Saatchi Art. In certain circumstances, the artist of a work available as a limited edition art print on Limited by Saatchi Art may license the image of the subject work for reproduction related to the sale of other consumer products, such as phone cases, apparel and other home décor accents (but excluding two dimensional art prints). The manner and consumer goods on which the image is reproduced are at the discretion of the artist, but the artist is precluded from permitting the subject work to be made available for reproduction on two dimensional art prints other than limited edition prints available for purchase on Limited by Saatchi Art.
A limited edition print that recites the number 2/25 means that the buyer is purchasing the second published print in a maximum print edition of 25 total prints (plus any proofs) of a specified size and dimension based upon a high resolution digital image of the artist’s original work of art. The Certificate of Authenticity tells the buyer if more than one edition has been published from the original image. For example, a print numbered 2/25 in a limited edition of 25 could be sold measuring 12" x 24" and another print numbered 2/15 in a limited edition of 15 could be sold measuring 24" x 36". The Certificate of Authenticity in that example would show that the total number is 40 prints (plus any proofs).
Award-winning British photographer Jon Wyatt's work documents the growing detachment of modern cultures from our physical landscape. Landscape photography is used to document landscape issues.
