Vasquez's Raven Print

Out there on the edge of a jagged rock formation was perched one of the guardians of this land. He watched my sinuous progression with nonchalance, as unmovable as the stones surrounding him. Only a few of his lackered black feathers curled up in resistance to the desert winds. Successions of violent squalls came in waves cut by momentary pools of dizzying calm. He tilted his head down to one side, eyeing with definitive intent a cluster of rocks below. After a short pause, he let his weight delicately pull him over the ledge and took the plunge. All would have been silent if it had not been for the lonesome whistling coming from a juniper bush. The stunted tree had spawned out of the cracks decades ago; its wooded contortions were a testament to the turbulent elements which had sculpted this scenery. On the rock face, petroglyphs told tales of horned demons, shamans invoking rain, and human-headed birds reminiscent of the Egyptian Ba. To the Tataviam, the raven was shrouded in mystery, but not one of darkness and evil. To them, the raven was a messenger from the gods, symbolizing the unknown, bringing nature's wisdom and truth to those attuned to his guidance. He was only to be feared by wrongdoers. The wind had died off now, and low altitude clouds silently settled over the landscape. The air became heavier as his muffled crow softly dissipated in the distance.
