About The Artwork
Victor Noir tomb, Père Lachaise, Paris, France. May 2007. Photography on black and white film. The bronze sculpture is one of the most visited in the cemetery, as the celebrated tradition consists of rubbing the protruding crotch area to wish for a husband within a year (or having a child within a year). If the wish comes true, the woman then returns to visit the tomb, and places a toy, flowers or various gifts into the hat at the foot of the statue, sometimes kissing the face too.
