About The Artwork

Pain, confidence, sensuality, sadness — all manifest in subtle ways. In a sense, my practice is an attempt to make explicit these hidden depths. On top of that, however, an element of randomness persists, representing the haphazard processes that ferry us along our life’s journey.

My work begins with a moment of human connection, whether it’s meeting a model for the first time, or getting to know on a deeper level someone I’ve photographed before. I am interested in the geography of bodies and emotions — the ways in which our experiences inscribe themselves on a physical landscape, and the possibilities for interpretation this provides. Though I trained as a commercial photographer, the limits of a purely representational artistic practice soon became apparent. As my work has evolved, I have turned to collage and digital manipulation in an attempt to deepen the mystery of the image and, in doing so, expose the buried truths of its subject. Pain, confidence, sensuality, sadness — all manifest in subtle ways. In a sense, my practice is an attempt to make explicit these hidden depths. On top of that, however, an element of randomness persists, representing the haphazard processes that ferry us along our life’s journey. Ultimately, I see my project as something intensely human. It is an attempt at connection through obscurity — much in the way that you can’t look directly at an eclipse, I am trying to grasp a subject through peripheral glances and, in doing so, come to a deeper sense of understanding.
