In Shiraz, once renowned for its Syrah grapes and as the birthplace of poets Saadi and Hafez, I captured a photograph that tells a different story. Now, the city bleeds with poverty and addiction, a stark contrast to its rich past. This photograph is of a working girl, sitting on the cold edge of a street that divides the city's upper middle class from its poorer areas. On an autumn night, wrapped in a thin chador, she rests her tiny feet in plastic slippers, her toes faintly visible. In silence, she waits for passersby, likely full from a meal, to weigh themselves. Our exchange was wordless, marked only by a gaze. She looked into my lens, and in that moment, I captured her dignity, forever preserving it. Her eyes held the depth of an adult, a sea of innocence, and a mind filled with unanswered questions, as she struggled to survive another day. In photography there is nothing like a human face and a story it can tell. For a small sum, she offers to weigh the worth of others, to feed her family. The scale, her source of income, bears an image of a tulip field — a symbol of her unending hopes and dreams. Location: Shiraz, Iran. ©Golnaz Jamsheed (2013). All Rights Reserved.
