Mervenil Emiroglu remembers as a child that people travelled many long distances to make a wish at special places or trees. A Wishing Tree is an important figure in ancient and current mythology, and a common event in many people's lives today. People generally tie small pieces of fabric, strings or ribbons to the branches of a tree in the hope that their wish will be granted. The association with the tree is deep rooted almost like bonding with the earth and mother nature itself, which leads to that special connection and ultimately your wish. Emiroglu understands that we all have those moments when we want to wish for something to happen, that can change our lives forever. It's a continuing tradition and one that people relate to. You walk by the tree and imagine a mother wishing her son to return safe from his tour in the army, a little girl hoping to get a doll house for her birthday, a family who wants to buy a house for the first time or a young couple wishing to have a baby. These are all real stories and ones that we can all relate to in our everyday lives.

Artist Statement: I am interested in evoking both the familiar and unfamiliar - the feeling of the uncanny. My work is based on ornaments I have found which I then morph and manipulate. Audiences may find they recognise some parts of my work, while others remain a mystery. I am also interested in lost memories, history, meanings and cultures, and experimenting through various media in my response to the ornaments allows me to explore altered meanings. Techniques: painting (oil and acrylic), paper, print making, photography, video making, instillations, and 3D, using various materials.
