About The Artwork

I walked the streets of Paris in winter in search of a door which captured some of the essence of the city, and where I could capture the people of the city passing it, framed by the door. From far, it is a simple repeated image of a beautiful door; from close one can read so much into the imagined stories of all these people and the journeys they are on. I have worked on a series of doorways in this style in New York and Johannesburg, but this is the first time in my other favourite city - Paris. The images were then carefully chosen and combined at my studio in Johannesburg.

James Delaney is a South African artist working across multiple disciplines - printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture - from a large studio in Victoria Yards near downtown Johannesburg. He has won several awards including BASA and SAIA, work is in collections including Merrill Lynch Bank of America, the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the City of Johannesburg, and numerous private collections. A lot of his work references the remnants of history in the world around us - wildlife which once roamed urban areas, or the stories told by architecture and doorways. He has always travelled a lot, both in the wilderness spaces of Africa and the built up cities of the world, working every year in New York. More recently he has become known for his work restoring The Wilds, a 40 acre park in central Joburg which had been largely abandoned, and where he has installed 100 sculptures which show the wildlife which once lived in these hills.
