I was much influenced by this Photograph by Bruce Davidson from a series of his on Harlem NY. USA. New York City. 1966. East 100th Street. http://www.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&ALID=2K7O3RP0468#/SearchResult&ALID=2K7O3RP0468&VBID=2K1HZSQZMGKPV&PN=3 I was on Foundation Course and it was 1972. I was also using this shape which Elsworth Kelly and my friend Alan was using. I made an Art Book called 'Symphony - A Riff Number' using this image. I was a gob smacked art student and happy to be so. I was printing the image on both sides of the paper and cutting out the shape on all but one side and then folding it back. My paintings are imagined rather than observed. They are expressive and colourful. It's all about the painting process, applying colour, using texture, making marks. the texture on the surface. The paintings develop over time. They may appear finished at one point but then later are reworked. The work you like may have been several other versions during its lifetime. My enduring influences are many but include mostly Turner, Rembrandt and Rothko. All my paintings are painted around the edges and therefore may not need framing.
