ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This gouache painting was supposed to be used to promote my graphic design practice in 1991, but was never used for that purpose until 2017. It is a landscape view of the hill-top village of Seillans, in the Var countryside in the South of France. Cypress trees stand sentry over an olive grove — olive leaves glinting of silver in the breeze. It does make a handsome Giclée archival quality print. Signature incorporated.

Bill Curtis has worked as a graphic designer in his own practice in New York City for decades, and he currently maintains Curtis&Company, a busy design office in Manhattan. Born and raised in the tri-state area, he attended Pratt Institute, and graduated with a BFA degree in Graphic Design. As a graphic designer, he has had the opportunity to create communication materials in many areas—print, film, signage, web, exhibits, and in particular, branding. The original Dunkin’ Donuts logo, the New York City Bar logo, and the Absolut Vodka bottle graphics were created in his office. His work has been included in many design shows and publications; has received numerous awards; and has debuted in such places as the White House South Lawn, and the battlefields of Vietnam. Here, his interest turns to the creation of artwork as fine art prints, which, he believes, may serve to build a more lasting record of his creative activity—especially with his current print collection, which is derived or repurposed from some of his outstanding late century advertising and promotional work. To round out a picture of his endeavors though, it should be pointed out that he has also been the President of the Turtle Bay Association for more than 43 years. As he would say, the organization’s mission to ensure quality of life in the area around the United Nations, is forever a work in progress.
