About The Artwork

This is the first of the polygon designs that I drew in 1968. It was first, not because it was easier, but because it was on my mind when I started drawing. I deduced it from my Pacific Epiphany. This arrangement is distinguished from the first one I conceived, in that all the polygons have a side parallel, as opposed to sharing an apex. I initially regarded this attribution as a female gender difference, the Mother. Later, I utilized more appropriate, musical connotations, ‘sharp’ or ‘flat’. The title ‘flat’ does not imply the design represents something that is flat; it has sides parallel, that’s all. Though there is, theoretically, an infinite number of polygons, I only drew 2 dozen because the pencil thickness quickly started merging. This design is part of the first variable (out of five) in my Progressive Polygons - Five Variables (a grouping of my “Polygonum Progredi”). It also forms part of the first pair of the Parent group in the progression of my “Smithon Morphology”. All of the drawings in the “Polygonum Progredi” were created using nothing more than pencil on paper, plus a compass, protractor and straight edge. It stands as my first, maybe best, example of an original work of art that was not influenced by anyone else.
