About The Artwork

'Journey to Freedom', is a hand pulled etching and aquatint, printed using fine inks and Fabriano Rosaspina printmaking paper. The inspiration for the artwork is the odyssey or life journey. The spiral of the shell unfolds and merges with the ripples of the waves which rock the boat. The octapus, symbol of the sea and escape, both protects and restrains the reclining female figure. References to the Odyssey include the floating figure and the sea monster, inspired by Renaissance sea beasts, symbolizes the dangers encountered by the travellers on their search for freedom. The technique of etching facilitates the creation of marks and lines to build up an atmospheric effect, aquatint creates a diffused and gradated background. Chromatic variations are created by using warm reds for the octapus, blue/black for the figures and and blue for the background. I would like the viewer to reflect on their own journey through life when looking at my etching. Hand printed by the artist using fine Charbonnel inks and Fabriano Rosaspina printmaking paper.

Born in England and living in Athens, Greece, her work reflects both an element of storytelling and a personal life journey. Drawn by the different culture and landscape of Greece, Judy Attwood left England in the 1980's, since then she has achieved many of her goals including a mastery of printmaking and in art education. Courses at the Athens Printmaking Centre opened up the world of printmaking and more recently Lino and woodcut workshops at Opificio Della Rosa in Italy have further extended her range of work. The etching process offers the chance to create plates made up of intricate lines, marks and tonal contrast. Her work develops through a journey from initial drawing to final print, intaglio offers the element of surprise and discovery. Recently she has been working on a series of circular etchings which offer an element of continuity and break from the confines of the rectangular format.
