About The Artwork

Afonso Mayenda, also known as Mbanza Hamza, is a professor and Angolan HRD. He is a member of Central Angola 7311, an online platform that publishes articles about social and political issues and that documents human rights violations. Mbanza Hamza was one of the young political prisoners that were on trial for supposedly attempting a coup d'etat in Angola. They were arrested in Luanda for reading an adaptation of Gene Sharp's book "From Dictatorship to Democracy" and also for publicly questioning the regime led by President José Eduardo dos Santos. Even before the trial, the young guys were remanded in custody for more than three months. ‪#‎FreedomNow‬ is a transnational initiative that emerged and gained force specially during the hunger strike of the rapper, and also political prisoner, Luaty Beirão. After months of detention and judicial harassment, in 2016 they were released and all charges dropped. On October 1st, 2015, I did the portrait of M'banza Hamza to support #LiberdadeJa/#FreedomNow campaign. This image, although created chemically, with emulsion, light, water, with ink and paper, was generated with the intention to live and replicate in the digital world. And that's what happened. More than that, the image traveled and returned to the material world, in other countries, being reproduced on T-shirts and printed materials as fuel for mobilization and change. The original image was exhibited at OPUS Projects in Chelsea, New York during 2016. The original print was sold and the full amount reverse to the family of the activists.
