About The Artwork

Although his graphics never carry a hint of figurative elements, they are neither purely aesthetic color-form weightings, still self-sufficient stenograms of an art act inherent in art. This may be clear from the portfolio "Mondbrand" (1995, 12 etchings). Nussbächer focuses solely on black and white, the "mother" colors and core contrasts of the graphics. Black blocks, black spots, black whirlpools flow, grab, pour into the white. Gaps open, streaks gnaw into the surface, craters burst, lines form and seep away. Pearly spots like air bubbles, small acid lakes run through the white. The body becomes black (without describing anything physical), gray becomes a veil or shadow, white becomes light. Velvety rich tones nest in black and create depth, white streaks chimerically between the zones. Associations are released, thoughts and forebodings, of a chiaroscuro that not only permeates the leaf but also the soul. That's where the mysterious title came from; like the sunburn the skin hurts, the "moon fire" burns on the soul. For years, Nußbächer collected possible names and finally opted for the poetic metaphor that describes the absurd bipolarity of the world order like no other. Because all of his works - including the paintings and the drawings - are parables, philosophical parables, which accompany the abstract terms in an abstract visual language. Nussbächer comments on his work in a work manual in which he captures his thoughts in a key and extremely poetic manner. With "moon fire" it says: "Phantoms of forebodings rise and are left to the plate. Gravure eclipse, velvety black. Cool gardens of the past. Tiring hikes between the highs and lows of emotions. Thirst for light, groping in the dark. Glimpses of light in the darkness. Maps of darkness permeated by Speechless handling of the depth of nitric acid. Black trip in the night express. What comes from outside is compressed inside. The pleasure of agony moves from the brain to the hand on the plate. No people, not even plants, live comfortably in these leaves, only darkness and light. What can be explained loses the secret. In the light or the darkness - no matter; it is both the same from a different point of view. Brainwave energy in alpha and beta waves. Swirl of dimensions, twilight. Interbrain activity without direction and goal and beyond all usability. Black is the densest color oscillation. Dark secrets. Black swamps of exhausted memory. Hopelessly beautiful. Johann Nussbächer is a German artist, painter, printmaker and draftsman. With national and international exhibitions. His wide work consists of different groups of works of painting, an extensive graphic work as well as "figurative expressive" drawings. His oeuvre has a high density of creation. His most famous paintings are the "works in varnish" The newest painting group is called "Reale Fiction". These pictures look surprisingly three-dimensional, but are actually quite flat and they are exactly like the "work in varnish" unique in the world. Born in the Upper Palatinate near Regensburg, he has been living in a former school in Spessart for over 30 years. In addition to 5 catalogs on his work, there are three television broadcasts about him. The films can be viewed on his homepage: http://www.nussbaecherjohann.com/
