I completed the drawing for this design in 1970 along with its relative, 9 Polygons with a Shared Point (the ‘sharp’) while I was residing at the Coach House Press in Toronto. The original drawing forms part of my “Polygonum Progredi” compendium. It shows 9 Polygons with Parallel Sides (the ‘flat’) descending at 11.25 degrees from a vertical triangle to a horizontal, 11-sided polygon. The drawings were done with pencil on paper, using only a compass, protractor and straight edge. I made the paper (which I drew them on) by hand in the paper laboratory at Massey College were I was teaching paper making. This design forms part of the Turned group in 3a X-Axis Rotation, of my Progressive Polygons - Five Variables. I originally conceived of it as the front elevation for a sculpture. Indeed, this design matched the neon sculpture displayed for 25 years outside the Art Gallery of Ontario. Because it was created with little input from me, its flickering on and off proved to be light pollution for the neighbors. Authorship also became contentious. The sculpture was removed. I was awarded copyright to the design.
