About The Artwork

This is the final image from my hand-printed book, Pizza from Scratch, published by Soilmentes Press in 2017. The pizza crust is made from home-grown wheat and topped with home-grown heirloom tomatoes, garlic and basil, and home-made mozzarella, only the pepperoni is store-bought. It was baked in my hand-built adobe clay wood-fired pizza oven on our farm in Iowa. The story is told in a series of woodcuts and linocuts, it is a visual narrative. I feel it is increasingly important to know where our food comes from and to know the origins of the ingredients. To this end I decided to make make a pizza, completely from scratch. I hope this linocut conveys the colors, and aromas of a freshly -baked pizza. Linocut is a medium I first learned as student at the Central School of Art, in London. The prints are printed by hand on an iron hand press. Read more about it on my website solmentes.com and follow the progress on instagram, I'm @solmentes.

David Esslemont is an award-winning British artist, designer, printer, bookbinder, and publisher now living in America. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1953, Esslemont studied Fine Art (painting) at the Central School of Art and Design in London (now The University of the Arts). Among his tutors were Blair Hughes-Stanton and Cecil Collins. After leaving college he established his own press in Newcastle, where he printed, bound and published a number of books with wood engravings, including several with engravings by the eighteenth-century wood engraver Thomas Bewick and his contemporaries. From 1985 to 1997 Esslemont was Controller (managing and artistic director) of the Gregynog Press in Wales. At Gregynog he designed and printed several prize-winning books including Giraldus Cambrensis for which he won the Felice Feliciano Award for Book Design in 1991. He now lives in rural northeast Iowa and continues to make books and prints, lately on food related themes such as chili, curry and pizza.
