About The Artwork

The concern of this exercise was to overlap the two primary Parent designs (‘sharp’ and ‘flat’) from my “Smithon Morphology”. I took my two original pencil drawings, scanned them with my computer and vectorized them using Adobe Illustrator. I took each image and then alternately made each polygon opaque or transparent. The polygons in the ‘sharp’ version start with an opaque (gold) triangle; the ‘flat’ version starts with a transparent triangle. The gold hexagon in the middle shows the next direction of my focus, which has preoccupied me ever since. There is the sense of a pending three-dimensional quality to the design, suggesting a cube standing on end in the middle (implying the design’s circumference being a cylinder). I exported my two Illustrator files into Photoshop, augmented their transparencies with inner and outer glows and coloured to my delight. It’s eye candy, but it’s possibly based on one of the most important and overlooked designs I’ve ever made. It poses the question: when is a discovery an invention? If I had to choose one piece of artwork to take with me to a deserted island, this might be a good candidate. It satisfies both my intellect (having distilled in it an infinite potential), as well as my retinas.
