About The Artwork

I have always loved the original 1930's animations where the characters are in continual flow and motion. I am especially interested in the evolution of technology and how this interacts with art and creativity. This character is based on Goofy who was originally called Dippy Dawg. The style is based on the influence of early pioneers of graphic design and abstract art. Bauhaus, Jan Tschichold, Piet Swart, the Memphis Group, Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz and OpArt of the 1960s and 70s

Richard Levine My interest and motivation comes from finding new ways of looking at the seemingly familiar. Geometric shapes and patterns are used to bridge more organic shapes, playing with iconic images of people or characters which are imbued with historical symbolisms and meaning. My relationship as an artist with the viewer is therefore often mediated by the prior existence of these images in previous contexts. The patterns themselves are influenced by the Bauhaus, Jan Tschichold, Piet Swart, the Memphis Group, Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz and OpArt of the 1960s and 70s, but with a definite fresh 21st century spin. The topography of the subject is mapped and played over with pattern and design to offer a new set of responses. I hope to give new life, energy and movement to all my pieces.
