About The Artwork

This is a lino cut print. Image size 10.2 x 15.2 cm, printed in black ink on cartridge paper sheet size 21 x 30 cm. I'm interested in crows and ravens, their intelligence, knowingness, reputation as messengers from another world. I talk with them. I bring them scraps of food. I wonder why a group of ravens is called an unkindness, and a group of crows is called a murder. I guess it's because they are carrion eaters, so would happily eat the dead. Or maybe the almost dead. But we also think of them as messengers from the spirit world, and scientists have been studying them, pronouncing them to be the most conscious of animals, who know what they know. I did a lot of research for this print, making drawings, looking at lino-cuts made by others. I was tempted to do a careful study, but in the end I just jumped in, allowing my intuition to guide me. I feel I have captured something of the elegance and intelligent observation of the crows where I live, and their distant crows nest on the Sussex Downs (though actually the crows I talk to live in St Annes Well, Hove!).

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
