About The Artwork
Light and shell-like in weight and appearance, dynamic, subtle and energetic in form, "Appearance of Being No.1" stands structurally balanced on 3 points of contact with the ground. The pure curves and turns engage lightly with the points of contact giving the sculpture a sense of motion, swiftness and weightlessness. Bonding visually with the space and air surrounding it, the form calls forth a sense of transience or impermanence. Carved from 6 pieces of walnut hand planed and glued together with careful attention to growth ring matching and alignment in lamination, the wood figure blends and compliments the form harmoniously.

Mike Sasaki was born in Toronto, Canada. He graduated from the Bachelor of Design Honours program at York University / Sheridan College in 2005. He lived in Tokyo, Japan for 5 years where he was immersed in traditional and modern Japanese culture. The martial arts philosophies have played an important role in his artistic development. In his search for a hands on approach he has found sculpting in wood a wonderful solution. He is currently living in Metro Vancouver and focusing on the metamorphic line of abstract wood forms.
