About The Artwork

Carved by hand from pure white alabaster, "Awakening Muse" has an ethereal quality, from the serene expression on the face, to the softly translucent quality of the alabaster itself. "Awakening Muse" is a representation of creative inspiration and artistic perception. The smoothness of the human face contrasts to the roughness of the chiseled stone, symbolizing the emergence of an idea or inspiration that comes out of nowhere yet is hewn from the material world around us. The piece can be interpreted as a manifestation of the creative process itself. Ms. Sabol carved "Awakening Muse" entirely by hand during her NPS artist residency as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Sculptor-in-Residence. The alabaster she chose to carve was sourced directly from the Black Hills of South Dakota, giving the piece the added distinction of originating directly from the place she carved this singular sculpture. "Awakening Muse" achieved international recognition when it was honored with Best-in-Show for Sculpture in the Devonport Arts Festival Show in Auckland, New Zealand. The original sculpture is available for purchase. The carved alabaster is mounted on a circular black wooden base. Size overall including base is 22"H x 12"W x 11"D You may contact Saatchi for more information or additional views of the sculpture.

Her sculptures can be seen in the public collections of Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park, Quiet Waters Park, and are held in many private collections throughout the world. Her work has won awards in international and national exhibitions. Lisbeth's work is currently shown in The Arts & Artisans Gallery in Luray, Virginia, and Cedar Street Galleries in Honolulu, Hawaii. A selection of her stone-carvings inspired by and created during official National Park Service residencies were recently highlighted in the National exhibition "Through Your Eyes” about artwork in U.S. National Parks. Lisbeth's work in public collections includes sculptures in Quiet Waters Park, Maryland; Glacier National Park, Montana; and Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Her marble sculpture at Rocky Mountain National Park is a detailed portrait of 14,259' Longs Peak she sculpted after climbing to the summit while NPS Artist-in-Residence in the Park. While official Sculptor-in-Residence at Mt Rushmore National Memorial in 2000 and 2001, Lisbeth sculpted several original sculptures while onsite demonstrating her stone-carving techniques to Park visitors. During her stay, she was granted access to climb Mt Rushmore. In 2003, Lisbeth spent a month carving a two ton block of stone at The Tareitanga International Sculpture Symposium in Wellington, New Zealand, a prestigious invitational event that features sculptors from all over the world. She sculpted a larger than life-size figure emerging from the block of stone. Lisbeth is a graduate of The College of William & Mary, earning degrees in Fine Arts and Biology.
