These Geodes are constructed of house paint, plaster, concrete wallpaper paste, various tapes, spackling and crack fillers, plastic; materials that are used as buffers between the raw structure of a building and the body. In the proper order and placement, working together they describe structural soundness. The objects began as a piece or chunk of a singular material; a clump of pillow filling, a piece of drywall, a shard of brick, a plastic bag. This fragment was meant to be a discarded thing. From this fragmental singularity a form is grown as a consequence of compounding coatings around it. Each layer first colors and seals the objects, then the coats begin to coat themselves. As the accretion progresses, the process becomes merely a respond to the visible surface layer and texture. With each addition, the memory of what was original is buried. The act become separate from the original- there becomes less and less connection. The object begins to exist to be erased by what is added- a palimpsest without deletion, an additive palimpsest of accretion. Is the original now more like a pearl? Smoothing a problematic grain of sand – or like paint and wallpaper, used to change the space we occupy, cover it and make it ours. I am interested in how the nature of making these geodes put the act of making into a less that ideal state, separating what is made form the origin. In an attempt to reclaim the original the geodes are cut back into until the centers are found. Then the sequence of accretion can be seen and considered.
