About The Artwork

Vertical stacks of porcelain sculpture tell stories of evolution and transformation. Life began in the sea and emerged onto land, Species diversify and adapt, growing and multiplying as humans enter the timeline. The vertical motif of the stacked sculpture plumbs the depth of experience and brings submerged content to the surface. This process is a remembering of a long-forgotten totality that reorders the imaginary of the past, where the development of human culture is translated into a work of speculative fiction. The initial inspiration for this body of work came in an epiphany regarding the influence of the built environment on the development of socio-cultural models and ultimately identity. I decided to pursue this topic by way of an historical look at the rise of the modern city, but soon realized that I had to look much deeper into the cultural record. As I progressed in the development of this project, I became more engaged with visualizations of human culture that were tied to our evolutionary processes; how we adapted and co-evolved with other species, interacted with our environments and developed consciousness. It is this evolutionary aspect that shifted the project from its initial sociological concerns and constellated its shards toward a greater emphasis on the human experience as embedded in nature. Fascinated by the endless variations in structure that they demonstrate. I developed a series of pieces incorporated into these sculptures, based on microscopic sea organisms called Radiolarians, documented in great detail by the German scientist, physician and artist Ernst Haekel It stands to reason that one cannot re-member the city, without reimagining the past. Our understanding of that past must reintegrate and respect that which has been occluded and denigrated, and so profoundly affected our relationship with the natural world. As a species, which continues to endanger its own survival with its destructive drives, we must temper our behaviors and heal our divisions. It seems fitting then, to create a contemporary edifice (monument) that reminds us of the lost sovereignty of the female principle and focuses on natural forms as the source of structural design (as well as materials) that have evolved into the built environments we know today.
