About The Artwork

The title of the marble sculpture '...this heart of stone' is a reference to the Rolling Stones song and the first lines of the verse, 'you never break...this heart of stone' will make the meaning become more luminous. Just like the object itself is shining from within, making it translucent in the light. The title is hinting at going through a painful separation, closing ones heart but not losing its lustre and shine, making it appear to be made of stone, yet fragile and rippling at the same time. The shape is from nature, depicting a small heart-shell blown up in scale and dimensions. The sculpture was part of an exhibition in France under the title 'On life and death' together with other marble exponents. The translucence has been arrived it by carefully hand polishing this rare white Portuguese marble to the finest polish

Soeren Ernst, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. I felt a strong calling to work in the three dimensional from the age of 17. At 19 I worked in the studio of German sculptor Joerg Plickat for a duration of two years. Travelling through Europe as a 'journeyman' I became a young independent sculptor and had first exhibitions in Scotland, where I also won 1st price in 'The arts of Scotland' competition, Pennicuik. On first visiting Portugal in 1989 I fell in love with the country and its people and the great variety of stones available for the sculptor. Since the 1990s I spend the summer in Germany and the winter months in Portugal.
