Considering the city as a site of memory & myth, power & persuasion, hierarchy, creativity and transformation, I create a series of large-scale porcelain sculptures that explore the effects of the urban environment on human identity. Working against the purity of pristine white porcelain, these rough slab-built structures are more geologic than architectural. Covered with pock-marked volcanic and lava glazes this earthy palette of matt glazes is layered with dark metallic glazes. Each of these sculptures defines a vertical tower. Steel mesh, coated with clay and integrated into the sculptures, warped and melted from the high temperature firing, references a post-industrial ethos. The buildings alluded to are not the works of celebrated architects, but the shanty towns and vernacular structures created by people in response to available materials and needs. At the crown of each tower is a figure. Collectively, these figures form a chorus, or community of individuals; dancers whose gestures convey a world of intensity, emotion and physicality.
