Polluted waves of greenish gray break beneath the dying sun. Broken-winged Icarus falls from the sky. As a species, we advance to new heights but at the expense of the natural balance in the world around us; our existence becomes precarious. This piece represents the folly of man. It is an elegy to the sea, and therefore also to ourselves. Silver cloud alabaster and translucent orange alabaster on black marble base.

Emerging Southern California artist. I paint in oil and sometimes acrylic. I sculpt in stone, mainly alabaster and marble. My creative endeavors are explorations in a larger journey of personal discovery and revelation. I hope that those who see my art are able to enjoy some part of my journey, and that perhaps in so seeing open a small detour or unexpected landmark on their own paths. ••• I cannot categorize or describe a theme to my art, and I envy artists who can. I paint landscapes and portraits and still life; impressions, sometimes more representational, sometimes more abstract. I paint things I see, that I find aesthetically pleasing, as I feel in the moment. Everyday scenes of the cliffs and trees and the sea where I live; workers working, or everyday people that I see when I am among people; everyday objects and scenes in my home. Or sometimes just the shapes of things, or movement or light. ••• I find stone to be fascinating. The process is so different from other endeavors where you start with nothing and fill a void with your creation. With stone, it is finding the creation inside of something that exists, slowly creating emptiness to reveal it. ••• I enjoy the feel of stone. When it is rough-hewn, when it is filed and rasped, and as it is polished, the smooth contours like cool skin. The subtleties in texture that sometimes can only be felt and not seen. I create figurative and abstract sculptures, pieces that suggest movement or contortion or action, or that capture a moment, or perhaps that simply capture light and shadow in a way I find pleasing. ••• JH
