Skipan / Design – 16 x 16 cm I.2020

'Skipan' is the icelandic word for 'design' in a comsmic sense. The name is a reference to how order, in the physical and metaphysical realm, tends to break down in a nuanced way in reality. This is precisely what occurs in these drawings, where the fields of charcoal and red sanguine overlap and create a separate reality from the rigid pencilled confines that determine the structure of each drawing. This is series of drawings made up of compressed charcoal, of varying hardnesses, sanguine and pencil, sized 16 x 16 cm, with a border of 2.5 cm, on 180 gm drawing paper. Each drawing is made up of 16 drawn areas, where the direction of each stripe, its density, location, and width are determined by pi.
