Unu Spiro - One Breath
Unu spiro translates to "one breath" in Esperanto, a language which is rooted in the present tense. I began my one-breath paintings as part of an evolving meditative practice to appreciate the present moment after becoming a mother in 2016.
Meditation helped me to slow down, to breathe, and to trust my intuition. Following my intuition, the process of painting in synchronicity to my breath helped me find stillness, peace, and gratitude for the present.
In my new role of motherhood and new identity, I felt a desire to simplify. I felt like I could say more with less. My work changed. Each stroke marks a breath, and a moment in time. Moments cannot be taken for granted when they are marked in time.
